Kitty Gillespie
The original Jazz Kat. A whimsical watercolor depiction of a cool kitty playing a trumpet- a brass instrument that is only brought to life with the addition of air. Without air to carry sound waves, none of us would be able to hear, let alone enjoy, music.

Bio

I am an avid cyclist of over 20 years and a former premed student. As relates to my figure & machinery series, I have a great appreciation for the body as a machine, and am always fascinated at how the body and bicycle meld to become a single, better and more efficient machine than either is individually. Artistically, I have always found a beauty in well-crafted machinery, and the modern bicycle is a wonder of functionality, craftsmanship and design. I hope viewers, whether or not they are cyclists, will see a bit of mechanism brought to the figures, and a bit of organic, fluid energy instilled in the bike imagery.

Regarding my other drawings, mixed media pieces and paintings, I am intrigued by line, light and color, and am most interested in using watercolor as I love that it is unpredictable. I find the most interesting things happen in my painting when “mistakes” occur- unplanned pigment/color reactions that I will never be able to duplicate.

I work primarily in watercolor, but also love collage, drawing, mixed media, acrylic & more. I gravitate toward creating human figures & portraits, animals and bicycle-themed work, in an organic, dynamic and non-photorealistic manner. I often combine people & animals with mechanical elements, and enjoy adding humorous elements in many of my pieces. I love creating custom work for clients & welcome commissions of all sorts. By day I’m the Entertainment Designer for The Upper Deck Company.
